exit sign red

All feelings stop and dampen
before I continue to sift through the
crashed wreckage, hands bruised,
dull pain settled in my arms and legs.
Exit sign red
flashing around me, the
ground stained the same color. my
hands scarred and weak. The red
lights give a single moment of clarity.
My head is buzzing, my hands are shaking. The
night feels infinite as the fire burns. I breathe
out smokey-tasting air, and keep looking. The front
part of the ship is rumbling, the ground
quakes as something explodes. I watch
rusted metal fly through the air,
shrapnel raining from the sky.
Tonight the sky is red. Tonight the world is
unfair. The fire will not warm my
viciously cold skin. No
water will cool my burns. My heart beats against my ribs like a
xylophone. I hear the metal tearing, like a
yell through the silence. The time
zips by, all to quickly, and for far too long.
